FA Cup Football in the 1930s

Many teams were regularly in the Finals of the 1930s. Arsenal played three finals. The Gunners won two and lost one. Portsmouth, Manchester City, Preston and West Bromwich Albion all played two finals, winning one and losing one. The finals at Wembley Stadium were well attended in the 1930s. No Final had fewer than 92,000 spectators. The 1939 Final between Portsmouth and Wolves was the most popular game with 99.370 spectators.

Club of the decade: Arsenal Football Club was established in 1886. The Gunners lost 1-0 against Cardiff in the 1927 Final. Three years later they were back at Wembley as winners. Arsenal defeated Huddersfiled 2-0 and won their first FA Cup. Two years later they lost to Newcastle in the Final but in the 1936 Final they were winners again. Arsenal won 1-0 against Sheffield United

Player of the decade: Ted Drake scored the only goal when Arsenal defeated Sheffield in the 1936 Final. Drake was a great goal scorer. To this day he holds the record for the most goals scored in the history of first division football in England, scoring seven goals against Aston Villa in December 1935. Arsenal won that game at Villa Park 7-1. With 139 goals in 184 games, Drake is fifth all-time scorer for The Gunners. However, he has better goal average than the number one on the list Thierry Henry (0.755 goals per game vs. 0.606 goals per game).
